Le gilde negli USA sono molto diverse
fra loro: alcune sono operano in modo molto informale mentre
altre hanno una struttura organizzativa molto articolata. Spesso
la scelta dipende dal numero degli iscritti, più è
piccolo il gruppo e meno necessita di organizzazione. La maggior
parte si riunisce una volta al mese. Se il gruppo è piccolo
si ritrova nella casa di uno dei membri, spesso però le
riunioni sono fissate in uno spazio affittato , spesso chiese.
Le nostre sono chiese riscaldate e hanno molte sale adatte a
riunioni. La maggior parte delle gilde ha una biblioteca. Se
si hanno pochi libri vengono tenuti in una scatola e portati
alle riunioni. 
Una gilda della dimensione
di quella di Seattle ha uno spazio nella chiesa, per i libri,
uno spazio piccolo ma con un armadio che possiamo chiudere a
chiave. Le riunioni iniziano alle 10 del mattino e proseguono
fino alle 14. Si servono the caffé e biscotti e ogniuno
porta con se il pranzo. Vi sono gruppi che si incontrano la sera,
per facilitare chi lavora. Solitamente al mattino assistiamo
ad una presentazione, spesso un conferenziare remunerato per
questo, ma ci sono anche presentazioni offerte dagli stessi membri
della gilda. Al pomeriggio di solito si fa del lavoro manuale,
che può essere un approfondimento pratico della presentazione
o un'attività a se stante. Tre o quattro volte l'anno
organizziamo dei seminari di due tre giorni con insegnati esterni,
pagati per questo. 5-8 volte l'anno invece membri del gruppo
offrono dei mini-laboratori di mezza giornata a partecipazione
gratuita. Molte gilde hanno momenti di scambio in cui si mostrano
agli altri i propri progetti recenti. Si discutono problemi tecnici
incontrati e i partecipanti cercano insieme le soluzioni.
Il gruppo può in realtà organizzarsi in modi
molto diversi, è una scelta degli aderenti che direzione
dare alle attività. Normalmente quando un gruppo si ingrandisce
si da una struttura associativa ufficiale. Alcune gilde organizzano
degli scambi, ad esempio tutti decidono di tessere un asciugamanao
per scmbiarseli ad una data fissata. Tipo ognuno tesse 12 tovaglioli
e ne riceve altrettanti, uno da ogni tessitore coinvolto nello
scambio. Molte gilde stampano una lettera di collegamento, una
volta al mese. La quota associativa serve per pagare gli affiti,
la stampa e spedizione del bollettino ecc.
Molti gruppi organizzano vendite, in autunno. La nostra
si è tenuta per tre giorni, a ottobre. La gilda trattiene
il 25% sulle vendite, il resto lo incassa il tessitore. A Seattle
solitamente tutti assieme incassiamo un totale di 35.000 dollari.
L'anno scorso è stato un anno eccezionale: incassammo
50.000 dollari (5O espositori esposero 5.000 pezzi n.d.r.). Per
quest'anno non so ancora com'è andata. Per quel che mi
riguarda è andata peggio degli anni scorsi. Sicuramente
ci sono molte altre cose di cui potrei parlare che adesso non
mi vengono in mente...

 You asked about
how our guilds are organized. There is no set way. Some are very
informal while others are highly structured. Much depends on
the size. The smaller the group, the less organization. Most
meet once a month. If small enough, homes are used, but most
meet in rented space such as churches(our churches are heated
here and have many meeting type rooms, art centers, etc.) most
guilds have some type of library. In smaller builds, it may get
carried to meetings in a box.
In a guild the size of Seattle, we have a room in the church
for our books. The room is small, but we can lock our cupboards.
A place like Lisio's library would be an ideal place to meet.
Our meetings start at 10 AM and go until 2 PM, with members bringing
their own lunch. Coffee, tea and cookies, etc. are furnished.
Some guilds meet in the evening to accommodate the working weavers.
We usually have a presentation in the morning(paid programs,
but you can have members present things too) and in the afternoon
it is more hands on. The afternoon may be a continuation of the
morning or it may be totally different.
We have paid workshops (2-3 days) by a tutor 3-4 times
a year and informal 2-4 hour mini workshops 5-8 times a year,
which are presented by guild members(no cost). Many guilds have
a show and tell time, where latest projects are shown. Weaving
problems are often brought up and everyone helps solve them.
The guild can really take any form you want, depending on your
needs and interests. As most guilds get larger, they usually
incorporate and register with the state. Some guilds have exchanges,
like all who want to weave towels and exchange at a preset time.
It can be a one on one exchange or if you weave 12 towels, you
get 12 towels in exchange, one each from 12 different weavers.
Many guilds have newsletters that go out once a month.
Dues are used to pay for rental, newsletter mailings, programs,
etc. I'm sure there is more I could tell you. Ask questions and
I will answer the best I can. Many guild have fall sales. Ours
was last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The guild keeps 25% of
the money and the rest goes to the weavers. In Seattle, we usually
do around $35,000.00 in sales. Last year, we did $50,000, but
that was unusual. I don't know what we did this year yet. My
personal sales were down compared to the last couple of years.
