Bedspread
B1 In order to develop a market abroad, the art of African weaving cannot be restricted to the offer of nyonuvo and nutsuvo the classic male and female cloths. The form of these traditional articles is difficult to adapt to new functions. Instead, an immediate example of a new format is Bedspread B1, designed by adapting the compositional symbols and structures of the traditional cloth to the normal dimensions of a bedspread for a double bed. The composition of
the patterns is arranged in atijija, which is the traditional sub-section of abadakà (the entire strip). There are four brocade designs, which are alternated in red or orange colours. |
|
The
brocade designs are similar in formal terms, because they are always woven in two sheds only (4-4 or 4-8, which interfere differently with the stripes of the plain-weave ground). Each shed is identical or graduated, thus producing surfaces which are perpendicular or diagonal. The choice of these traditional designs is not just formal, but also symbolic, because they represent the male and the female (Throne Moon), and the growth and difference of the various individuals (Crocodile), in the musical rhythm of the weaving (Drum Pulley) ... with humility, respect and responsibility! |
